IQNA – Warning of a dangerous escalation in state-sanctioned discrimination, the Council on American-Islamic Relations issued an urgent action alert urging Americans to demand Congress condemn a new Israeli death penalty law targeting Palestinians and to halt $500 million in new military funding.

The United States Congress in Washington, DC

It urged people to join CAIR in calling on Congress to condemn the new racist Israeli law that would impose the death penalty exclusively on Palestinians, and oppose any new US tax-payer funding for Israeli acts of genocide, an apartheid regime tied to an Israeli supremacist ideology, illegal land theft, and regional war.

The Israeli regime’s Knesset passed the law that makes the death penalty the default punishment for Palestinians in the illegally-occupied West Bank convicted of deadly attacks against Israelis. Illegal settlers and occupation forces who commit similar crimes – which are rarely punished – would not be subject to the law.

According to the State Department’s 2023 Human Rights Report on West Bank and Gaza, legal observers and defense attorneys have raised serious concerns about the structure and fairness of these proceedings:

“NGOs and various lawyers who defended Palestinians in Israeli courts argued that the structure of military trials… severely restricted Palestinian defendants’ rights… and that its structural biases… resulted in the military court maintaining a nearly 100 percent conviction rate.”

At the same time, Congress is advancing expanded military support for Israel through the FY2026 National Defense Authorization Act, authorizing at least $500 million in missile defense funding and additional support for joint weapons development. The debate is not about whether to fund Israel, it assumes it, focusing instead on how much more to provide and how quickly weapons can be delivered. This disconnect between Israel’s escalating human rights abuses and automatic congressional funding demands urgent action from lawmakers.

In a statement, Washington, D.C., based CAIR said:

“The Israeli parliament’s adoption of a racist law authorizing the hanging of Palestinian prisoners is the very definition of apartheid. Even the South African apartheid government never adopted a death penalty law so explicitly racist.

“The Netanyahu regime is completely out of control because our nation continues to bankroll its crimes, from the de facto annexation of the West Bank to the genocide in Gaza, to the ethnic cleansing of southern Lebanon, to the occupation of Syria to the illegal war with Iran that it triggered, to the closure of Christian and Muslim holy sites in Jerusalem (al-Quds).

“Congress is not just failing to act, it is actively advancing more military support while treating that US tax-payer funding as automatic, even as these abuses escalate.

“Every member of Congress, especially Democratic leaders of the House and Senate, must condemn these crimes, including the racist execution law, and announce their opposition to any further military funding for the Israeli apartheid regime.”

On Sunday, CAIR called on Congress to address Israel’s denial of the religious rights of Christians and Muslims after Israeli authorities prevented Catholic leaders from entering the Church of the Holy Sepulcher to celebrate Mass on the Christian holiday of Palm Sunday and continued to ban Muslims from praying at Al-Aqsa Mosque.
