IQNA – The 11th edition of Turkey’s international Quran recitation and memorization competition began on Monday.

The 11th edition of Turkey’s international Quran recitation and memorization competition began on Monday, April 20, 2026.

 

The international Quranic event got underway in Diyarbakir, east of the country, ilkha news website reported.

The opening ceremony was held in the assembly hall of the Saladin Ayubi complex, located in the Inişehr district in the center of Diyarbakir. A large number of guests, along with memorizers and competitors from various countries, were present at the event.

In this competition, 44 participants from 36 countries, including Egypt, Russia, Iran, Tajikistan, Denmark, Malaysia, New Zealand and Palestine, are present. Twelve participants compete in the Quran recitation category while the other 32 vie for the top prize in the memorization category.

The awarding ceremony of the competition, slated for April 29, will be held at the Presidential Complex in Ankara, the capital, with the presence of Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan.

Addressing the opening ceremony were Celal Büyük, Mufti of Diyarbakir; Osman Işın Yürek, Chairman of the Quran and Recitation Committee of the Turkish Religious Affairs Directorate; Mustafa Şentop, Speaker of the 29th Turkish Parliament; Hafiz Osman Şahin, Chairman of Religious Affairs; Sayyid Yaz, Justice and Development Party (AKP) Diyarbakir representative and other figures.

In his speech, Şentop said memorizing the Holy Quran has distinguished the Muslim Ummah throughout history. “This book is not only written but also preserved in the hearts of the people.”

Pointing out that nearly every family has one Quran memorizer, he said memorizing the Quran is a great and honorable status. He congratulated the participants in the competition and asked them not to forget the Quran in their prayers.

Hafiz Osman Şahin, Deputy Head of Religious Affairs, also thanked the organizers and said the Holy Quran is the book of life, the most beautiful word, the strong rope of God, and mercy and healing.

He added that reciting, memorizing and listening to the Quran are acts of worship and living its teachings is the ultimate goal.

He underlined the importance of paying attention to the application of the Quran in life.
