“For us, Ashura is a way and a school for fighting against oppression, defending the right, and safeguarding human dignity,” Ghalibaf said in a message on Monday evening on the start of the lunar Hijri month of Muharram.

“I extend my condolences to all the lovers of the Ahl-ul-Bayt (AS) school, peace be upon them, on the arrival of the month of Muharram, the month of epic and sacrifice, the month of keeping the flag of freedom and justice high,” he said in the message.

“This year, Muharram arrives while the great and grieving nation of Iran has gone through difficult and sad, but proud and magnificent days, and in a historical test, has once again shown its spirit of resistance and perseverance to the world, relying on the culture of Ashura. The epic creation of the children of this land in the past two imposed wars and the brave resistance of the Iranian nation against the enemies is a reminder of the fact that a nation that has Ashura will not bow down to any power.”

Ghalibaf added, “The dear martyrs of this battle are the continuation of the path of the martyrs of Karbala and the eight-year sacred defense; men who protected the honor, security and independence of Islamic Iran with their blood and proved that in the culture of (Imam) Hussein (AS), martyrdom is not the end of the path, but rather the beginning of the permanence of an ideal.”

Commemorating the country’s martyrs, especially former Leader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyed Ali Khamenei, Ghalibaf said the memory of the martyrs will live on in every mourning flag and every tear of love, and “as the Leader of the Revolution, Ayatollah Seyed Mojtaba Hosseini Khamenei, said, we will be seeking avenge their blood as long as we breathe.”

He went on to say, “For us, Ashura is a path and a school for fighting oppression, defending the truth, and safeguarding human dignity. Just as Imam Hussein (peace be upon him) stood against the front of oppression, the Iranian nation, inspired by that great epic, will stand against the arrogance and hegemony of the arrogant.”
