
Sheikh Mustafa Ismail was a famous qari and one of the most prominent figures in contemporary Egyptian Quran recitation and the founder of a unique school of Quran recitation that combines powerful performance, a pleasant voice and the innovative use of musical modes to serve the meaning of the Quran.
Mustafa Ismail was born on June 17, 1905, in the village of Mayt Ghazal, in the city of Al-Santa in the Gharbia Province of Egypt. He grew up in a deeply rooted Quranic environment and memorized the Quran at a young age, then enrolled in the Ahmadi Institute in Tanta to study the sciences of Quran recitation and the rules of Tajweed under the supervision of a group of prominent scholars and reciters.
His exceptional talent for recitation quickly became apparent, and thanks to his distinctive voice and remarkable ability to perform and recite, he gained widespread fame throughout Egypt, becoming one of the most prominent reciters of his generation. In 1944, Egyptian Radio appointed him as the official reciter of the Quran, and he was also chosen as the reciter of the royal palace during the reign of King Farouk.
His Quranic path was marked by important milestones. He recited Surah Al-Kahf at Al-Azhar Mosque for many years, and his recitations were broadcast on Egyptian Radio, reaching various parts of the Islamic world, and remained a source of inspiration for successive generations of reciters and lovers of the Holy Quran.
After traveling to many Arab, Islamic and foreign countries, and conveying the message of the Holy Quran to different continents, Sheikh Mustafa Ismail received the title of “Ambassador of the Quran to the World”. One of his most notable historical moments was his recitation of the Holy Quran at Al-Aqsa Mosque in 1977.
Mustafa Ismail received widespread official and popular recognition and was given numerous local and international medals and honors, including the Medal of Science in 1965 and the Order of the Cedar of Lebanon, among many other awards bestowed upon him for his efforts in the service of the Book of God.
