Millions of Iraqis Take Part in Martyred Leader’s Funeral in Karbala
It was a unique historical scene that evokes another Ashura in Karbala.
The ceremony was held with a delay because there was a delay in the arrival of the pure body of the martyred Leader to Karbala.
The body of the late Leader, accompanied by the remains of his family members who were assassinated alongside him, was transported from Najaf to Karbala on Wednesday afternoon via the famous Arbaeen road.
The governor of Karbala said the reason for the delay was due to the massive participation of people and tribes in the ceremony along the route between Najaf and Karbala.
As the body of the martyred Leader arrived in Karbala, the gates of the holy shrine of Imam Hussein (AS) and the Bain al-Haramain (area between the holy shrines of Imam Hussein (AS) and Hazrat Abbas (AS)) were closed to pilgrims and mourners to better manage the ceremony.
Then Maghrib and Isha prayers were performed, led by Sheikh Abdul Mahdi al-Karbalai, the representative of Iraq’s top Shia cleric Ayatollah Ali al-Sistani in Karbala.
Brigadier General Esmaeil Qaani, the commander of the Quds Force of the Islamic Revolution Guard Corps, was in the front row of the prayer.
Meanwhile the Iraqi Popular Mobilization Units (PMU) announced that the number of people present at the funeral ceremony of the martyred Leader in Karbala exceeded 4 million people.
Among those present at the funeral ceremony at the holy shrine of Imam Hussein (AS) was senior source of emulation Ayatollah Sayyed Taqi al-Modarresi.

Iraqi authorities had declared a public holiday to allow for the massive turnout.
Earlier, a similar procession was held in the holy city of Najaf, where the scale of the turnout was described as unprecedented, as many mourners had traveled overnight from across Iraq and beyond.
