Yemeni Calligrapher Preserving Authentic Quran Writing Heritage

Qassem continues the ancient tradition of Quran calligraphy, writing the divine verses carefully and according to the rules of Ottoman calligraphy.
It is an art that, according to him, is rooted above all in attachment to the word of God and the effort to preserve the authentic Islamic heritage.
Qassem, who works in a workshop in his home in Sana’a, carefully dips his pen in ink before writing each letter, combining his personal passion with a traditional art that has its own precise and specific principles.
The Yemeni calligrapher says the process of writing Quranic verses is completely different from writing any other text.
He showed an example of his first experience in writing in Naskh script, which is the most common script for writing the Quran, and then explained about writing the Quran based on Ottoman calligraphy.
This type of calligraphy is based on very precise rules that pay special attention to the meanings, rhetoric, language, and interpretation of the Quran, he noted.
Regarding the paper used in calligraphy and writing the Quran, Qassem said that in the past, special paper was used, but now modern industrial paper is used, which allows the calligrapher to practice this art without the ink penetrating the back of the page and leaving traces of the writing on the back of the page.

This Yemeni artist highlighted his motivation for continuing this path, saying, “My first motivation is my attachment to the Book of God. Second, writing the Holy Quran is a great honor and responsibility, and third, it is because this work is an opportunity for me to develop and strengthen my talent in the art of calligraphy.”
He emphasized, “Since I entered the field of calligraphy, nothing has helped me develop this talent as much as writing the Quran.”
