A competition for memorizing and reciting the Quran in Libya is set to attract participants from 65 different countries, according to the Awqaf Ministry of Islamic Affairs which is organizing the event.

“We invited 150 countries to take part,” head of the Ministry’s department for competitions Sheikh Mohamed Ali Al-Rabou told the Libya Herald, “but only 65 agreed.” He said the other 85 countries apologized for not participating, citing the security situation in Libya as the reason.

The participants, all under 25 years old, would come from Arabic, Asian, and European countries, said Rabou. Of the seven judges, he added, three would be Libyan.

The Awqaf Ministry is sponsoring the competition and the winner will take away LD 100,000. There are also generous prizes for the runners-up.

The ninth annual ‘Libya International Award for Memorizing the Holy Quran’ will run from 23 to 28 November at Tripoli’s Dat Al-Emad Complex.
