The government of Mauritania said opposition groups and parties have been behind insulting the sanctity of the Quran in the country.

Government spokesman Sayed Mohammad Walad Muham said opposition parties who have failed to enter the country’s political scene via elections have plotted to cause disorder in the country and provoke the citizens by defiling the Quran.
He underlined that security forces are working to arrest the perpetrators of the sacrilegious act and will soon inform the public about the outcome of their investigation.
On Monday, March 3, four unidentified men entered a mosque in the capital Nouakchott, removed four copies of the Quran, and desecrated them.
As news spread about the incident, thousands of people gathered in front of the presidential palace to show their anger.
The demonstration got violent as police used tear gas to disperse the protesters.
One of the demonstrators, a university student, was killed in the clashes, reportedly for inhaling a large amount of tear gas.
The Islamic Republic of Mauritania is a country in the Maghreb region of western North Africa. Virtually all Mauritanians are Muslim.
