This annual Quranic recitation commonly known as 'Al-Quran-karango' in Mandinka has been observed for the past 17 years.
The Jarra Kanikunda 'Al-Quran-karongo,' started during the imamship of the late Mama Kemo Saidykhan of the village. The gathering has since become one of the biggest Muslim convergences in the history of The Gambia. During the event, the recitation of the Holy Quran is held a week before the grand day of the Ziyara, from morning till nightfall, local conferences on some pertinent social and religious issues are discussed from the point of Islam, by some very revered religious scholars; and a night vigil held during the night of the 3rd of May which runs from 10p.m till fajr.
About Kanikunda Kanikunda is a village, located in the Lower River Region of The Gambia. It is believed to be closed to a thousand-year-old when a Tukulor marabout, called Yorro Khan travelled from Futa Toro in Senegal and was accepted by the then Soninke rulers from the nearby village of Sankwia. The village has since produced so many scholars from both the Islamic and Western school of thoughts.
