--A forum on ‘Islam and Human Rights’ was held yesterday, December 28, in Turkey’s capital of Ankara, risalehaber reported.
Organized by Turkey’s Society for Social Studies (SETÜD), the forum featured a speech by social affairs expert Nezir Akyeşilmen.
In his speech, Mr. Akyeşilmen said that modern human rights concepts have roots in religious ideas. “The right to liberty, private property rights and the right to life are all in accordance to religious teachings,” he stressed.
Referring to a Hadith from the holy Prophet of Islam (PBUH), “the best among you is one who avoids harming others with his tongue and hands”, he said, “this indicates how important people’s rights are in Islam.”
According to Mr. Akyeşilmen, if Islamic governments today followed the example of the government established by the holy Prophet (PBUH), Muslim societies would have no problems in terms of human rights. He regretted that Muslims have ignored Quranic and Islamic principles and look up to the west in search for human rights.
