Tehran’s interim Friday prayer leader said religious democracy as a model for the world only exists in Iran.
Ayatollah Ahmad Jannati made the remark on Friday while addressing Friday prayer worshippers at the University of Tehran’s Campus, adding that in the past 34 years (since the victory of the Islamic Revolution), Iran has held the freest elections in the world.
“We want a free election with massive turnout for the world to see and previous experience shows this will happen.”
He called on the media to urge people to take part in the polls with awareness and insight, adding that the media should observe impartiality in the election.
The senior cleric also warned against smear campaigns during electioneering, saying it runs against the teachings of the religion, law and ethics.
Elsewhere in his sermon, Ayatollah Jannati referred to the massacre of Shia Muslims in Pakistan, saying that no one is convinced that the United States does not have a hand in these crimes.
“Through such acts, the enemy seeks to sow discord among Shia and Sunni Muslims,” he underlined, appreciating the measures taken by scholars, sources of emulation and seminarians in protest to the killings.
The interim Friday prayer leader of Tehran also pointed to the embargos imposed on Iran by the West, saying that the enemy thought sanctions would force the Islamic Establishment to retreat but it failed to achieve its objective and now has realized that it should ease pressures.
Ayatollah Jannati also extended congratulations on the auspicious occasion of Hazrat Zeynab (SA), which marks the Nurses Day.
He further commemorated Ayatollah Mousavo-Lari, who passed away last week, and highlighted the late cleric’s role in promotion of Islam in the world.
