A study of the history of Quran interpretation shows that thematic interpretation of the Holy Book began in the second century after Hijra (9th century A.D.).
Seminary and University Scholar Hojat-ol-Islam Ali Akbar Babaei made the remark in an interview with IQNA, noting, however, that the majority of the Quran exegeses written at the time were ordinal interpretations.
He said in ordinal exegeses, verses of the Quran are interpreted based on their order in the Scripture.
“In thematic interpretation, various verses that have a special theme are collected from different parts of the Quran and based on those verses, different aspects of the subject are discussed.”
According to the scholar, none of the thematic interpretations written in the 2nd century have remained today but their names have been mentioned in the book Al-Fehrest by Ibn Nadim and Al-Zarea by Aghabozorg Tehrani.
Hojat-ol-Islam Babaei said thematic interpretation mainly started growing in the contemporary era and numerous books were written on the subject.
He referred to the “Payam-e Quran” (message of the Quran) by grand Ayatollah Makarem Shirazi , Manshour-e Javid (everlasting charter) by grand Ayatollah Sobhani, and Ma’aref-e Quran (teachings of the Quran) by Ayatollah Mesbah Yazdi as some examples of thematic Quran exegeses in the contemporary time.
