“We condemn the attack on the Baharna Mosque and call for swift investigations to expose the perpetrators,” former MP Mohammad Hayef posted on his Twitter account on Saturday.
He further called the assault “an action aimed at instigating sectarianism in society” and said “it is the Interior Ministry’s duty to thwart such tactics.”
Fellow Sunni politician and former MP Dr Waleed Al-Tabtabaei criticized the attack and accused the perpetrators of “seeking to create sectarian turmoil in the country.” He urged the public to “stand united in the face of sectarianism.”
The attack, which is the fourth of its kind against the Baharna Mosque that is located in the Daiya district, drew strong reactions from the parliament with MPs demanding an immediate investigation to uncover the plot behind the recurrent assaults.
“Efforts are needed to arrest the perpetrators as soon as possible and expose the people behind these so that they can be prosecuted as well,” MP Khalid Al-Shatti said in a statement addressing the First Deputy Prime Minister and Interior Minister Sheikh Ahmad Al-Hmoud Al-Sabah.
Meanwhile, the Justice and Salam Assembly, a Shiite political group, indicated in a statement that the attack “proves that there are malicious attempts to damage our national unity,” and blamed the “government’s weakness” for its recurrence. Several MPs, most notably Safa Al- Hashem and Faisal Al-Duwaisan, demanded the minister’s resignation over the incident.
