The blast occurred on Wednesday in the city, situated some 50 kilometers north of the Iraqi capital.
Iraq has been the scene of deadly violence in recent days.
On May 27, a series of bomb blasts left more than 70 people dead in the capital Baghdad. Scores more were injured in the attacks.
Nearly 500 people have been killed across Iraq since the start of May.
On May 21, at least 42 people were killed and many others injured in a series of terrorist attacks across Iraq. A day earlier, nearly 100 people were killed in multiple attacks.
Iraqi Premier Nouri al-Maliki has blamed militant groups and the remnants of the former Ba’athist regime for the recent wave of violence. He has also accused some regional countries of fueling the violence in his country in a bid to topple the Iraqi government.
Violence has increased in Iraq since December 2011, when an arrest warrant was issued for the fugitive former Vice President Tariq al-Hashemi, who has been charged with running a death squad targeting Iraqi officials and Shia Muslims.
