44 Quran reciters and memorizers from 24 countries are competing in the international Quranic event until Thursday, August 29, tap.info website reported.
Speaking at the inauguration ceremony on Sunday, Tunisia’s Prime Minister Ali Larayedh described holding international Quranic events as a means for strengthening ties among Muslims.
He said the competition aims to enhance Muslim fraternity and encourage the youth to learn the Quran because the more they are familiarized with the pure teachings of Islam and the Quran, the more distant they will get from radical ideologies.
Also addressing the ceremony was Islamic Affairs Minister Nurollah Khadimi who said the competition was organized in line with the Tunisian government’s programs for training more Quran memorizers and reciters as well as establishment of a Quranic college in the near future.
Tunisia’s Mufti, Quranic and Islamic officials and social affairs minister as well as Muslim countries’ ambassadors to Tunisia were also present at the opening ceremony.
Iran, Turkey, Palestine, Niger, Indonesia, Qatar, Egypt and Russia are among the 24 countries attending the international Quran competition titled Sheikh Muhammad Bin Yalusha.
Mehdi Shayeq and Mohammad Mehdi Haqgouyan represent Iran in the competition in the categories of recitation and memorization, respectively.
