The interval period between the Executive Council’s 33rd session (Riyadh, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia: 27-28 December 2012) and the 34th session, to be held at ISESCO headquarters, in Rabat, was marked by numerous changes at the international and Islamic levels. This has placed additional responsibilities and burdens on ISESCO as a house of expertise committed to the highest standards of practice and creativity.
In implementing its activities over the year 2012, ISESCO actively sought to take into account Member States’ specificities and needs while being fully aware of the dangers, challenges and ever-changing developments within the Muslim world which witnessed, in some countries, the outbreak of crises, revolutions and armed conflicts. That’s why ISESCO was keen on making 2012 a distinctive year since it coincided with the third year of the 2010-2012 action plan, the celebration of its 30th anniversary, and the convening of its 11th General Conference. In this regard, the activities scheduled for education; science; culture and communication; external relations and cooperation; planning, information and documentation totaled 436 activities, 412 of which were implemented, with a 94% implementation rate. By contrast, the rate of implementation in 2011 didn’t exceed 82% on account of the repercussions of political and social developments on the Arab region and the difficulties encountered in implementing a large number of activities.
In response to the international events related to ISESCO’s fields of action, the Director General issued a number of messages and communiqués on the conditions of the Muslim world while denouncing all Israeli attacks and violations targeting the Al-Aqsa Mosque area, the terrorist bombings and attacks across the world, and the smear campaigns against Islam and Muslims.
Likewise, the Director General took part in international and regional conferences and forums in which he delivered addresses and presented studies reflecting ISESCO’s position vis-à-vis the issues of the Islamic world. He also met with heads of state and government and senior officials as well as secretaries general and directors general of international and regional organizations, and held talks with them on issues of common interest while seeking to enhance cooperation relations.
While expressing its satisfaction with the results achieved over the year 2012 and aspiration to make further achievements for the benefit of Member States and Muslim communities around the world, ISESCO commends the cooperation and support extended by the Member States as well as their leaders and competent parties and hopes to reinforce this positive trend in order to advance the issues of education, culture and communication and contribute to enhancing joint Islamic action and fulfilling the aspirations of Member States to development, progress and prosperity.
