Al-Wefaq in a statement condemned the arrest of Ebrahim Sharif, a senior official of the Wa’ad Movement, saying that it shows the intensity of the political crisis the regime is facing, al-Wefaq website reported.
Sharif, who had been in jail for five years, had been released last month but was arrested again last week on baseless charges.
Al-Wefaq called for the immediate release of the political activist, stressing that his detention runs counter to Bahrain’s national interests.
Bahrain, which is home to the US Navy’s 5th Fleet, has been witnessing almost daily protests against the ruling Al Khalifa dynasty since early 2011, with Manama using heavy-handed measures in an attempt to crush the demonstrations.
Scores of Bahrainis have been killed and hundreds of others injured and arrested in the ongoing crackdown on the peaceful demonstrations.
