TEHRAN (IQNA) – An Iranian cleric regretted that the world showed little and muted reaction to Saudi Arabia’s execution of prominent Shia cleric Sheikh Nimr Baqir al-Nimr.

Addressing Friday prayers worshippers in Tehran today, Ayatollah Mohammad Emami Kashani said the Saudi regime revealed its inhumane nature by killing Sheikh Nimr.

Sheikh Nimr just talked about Islam and the law and they (the Saudi regime) did this to him, Ayatollah Kashani said.

Saudi Arabia on Saturday executed Shiite Nimr, among dozens of others. The execution was widely condemned by both political and religious figures in different parts of the world.

Ayatollah Kashani enumerated Saudi crimes in recent years, including aggression on Yemen and support for terrorist groups like ISIL and Jaish-ul-Islam and criticized those who follow the Saudi regime.

Elsewhere in his remarks, Tehran’s interim Friday prayers leader referred to the attacks on Saudi diplomatic buildings in Tehran and Mashhad and noted that Iranian officials have condemned the attacks and that the judiciary is pursuing the case.

Anger boiled up in Iran, Iraq and elsewhere in the region following the execution of Sheikh Nimr on baseless terrorism-related charges on January 2.

In the early hours of January 3, furious demonstrators in Tehran and Mashhad stormed Saudi Arabia’s diplomatic buildings in protest at the Al Saud’s execution of the popular cleric.

President Hassan Rouhani criticized the attacks and called for the perpetrators to be brought to justice but Saudi Arabia decided to sever ties with Iran.
