Shias, Sunnis Hold Joint Friday Prayers in Baku

TEHRAN (IQNA) – Shia and Sunni Muslims in the Republic of Azerbaijan held Friday prayers together yesterday.

As a show of unity, they held the joint Friday prayers in the capital, Baku, TRT Turk reported.

It came with the beginning of the year 2016, which has been named as the Year of Cultural Diversity in the Caucasian country.

The move is slated to continue in the coming weeks and a Shia and a Sunni cleric will lead the prayers every other week.

The Republic of Azerbaijan is a Muslim majority country.

According to some sources, more than 85 percent of the people of the country are Shia Muslims while Sunni Muslims make up nearly 15 percent of the total population.
