
Mehdi Gholamnejadwent on the stage and recited verses 12 to 21 of Surah al-Jathiyah on Saturday night.
He told IQNA on Sunday that his performance was satisfactory and that he was the only reciter applauded by the audience on the first night.
Gholamnejadsaid he expects to win the top title in the recitation category, adding, however, that there are skillful and qualified Qaris who have yet to demonstrate their Quranic talents in the competition in the following days.
He also told IQNA that, according to the competition rules, the top winner in recitation is supposed to stay in Turkey until the end of the holy month of Ramadan and recite the Quran in different cities of Turkey.
The competition was inaugurated in Istanbul on Friday with the participation of 40 Qaris and 47 Quran memorizers from 55 Muslim and non-Muslim countries.
It is aimed at promoting the Quranic culture and encouraging memorization and recitation of the Holy Book.
The panel of arbiters comprises Quran experts from host Turkey as well as Malaysia, Saudi Arabia, Morocco, Lebanon, Somalia and Morocco.
The competition will continue until Thursday, June 16, and winners will be awarded at the closing ceremony on Friday, June 17.
