Subway Riders Stand Up to Anti-Muslim Bigot in New York
Google trend reports show there was a major spike in searches for the phrases: "kill Muslims,” "Muslims are terrorists,” and "Muslim ban.” And Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump stoked the flames of hatred further in a bellicose speech touting his plan to ban Muslims from entering the US.
But the attacks have also inspired acts of love and courage such as the Muslim man who donated blood to help those injured in the shooting while fasting for Ramadan. Another great example of Americans coming together happened earlier this week, when group of New Yorkers showed their support for the Muslim community in the most New York way possible.
On Monday morning, Amaira Hasan was riding the subway to work when a man began harassing two Muslim women wearing hijabs. He told them to "go back home and take their bombs with them,” but the rest of the subway car wouldn’t stand for the hate.
"This is New York City,” one subway rider said to the enraged man, "the most diverse place in the world. And in New York, we protect our own. It’s time for you to leave these women alone, sir.” When the subway car arrived at its next stop, the man quickly exited the car, to the cheers of everyone on the subway.
