THERAN (IQNA) – Tehran’s interim Friday prayers leader underlined the importance of promoting the culture and teachings of Imam Hussein (AS) during Muharram mourning ceremonies.

Addressing worshippers at the Imam Khomeini (RA) grand Mosalla (prayer hall) today, Hojat-ol-Islam Ahmad Khatami noted that Shia Muslims, including Iranians, will be holding mourning ceremonies with the start of the month of Muharram on Sunday.

He urged those who organize the ceremonies as well as clerics, speakers and elegy reciters attending them to pay attention to promoting the culture and teachings of the third Imam (AS).

While many have tried throughout the history to put out the light of the Imam’s teachings and messages, they have all failed and this light will be shining forever, he added.

Shia Muslims, and others in different parts of the world, hold ceremonies every year in the month of Muharram – the first month in the lunar Hijri calendar – to mourn the martyrdom anniversary of Imam Hussein (AS) and his companions.

The third Shia Imam (AS) and a small group of his followers and family members were martyred by the tyrant of his time - Yazid Bin Moaweya, in the battle of Karbala on the tenth day of Muharram (known as Ashura) in the year 680 AD.

Muharram will begin on Sunday, September 1, this year.
