TEHRAN (IQNA) – Iran’s foreign ministry spokesman hailed the successful organization of Arbaeen processions in Iraq as a sign of Islam’s magnificence and the fraternity between the two nations of Iran and Iraq.

Speaking at a weekly press conference in Tehran on Monday, Seyed Abbas Mousavi thanked the Iraqi government and nation for hosting Arabeen pilgrims from all over the world and organizing the procession in peace and security.

Arbaeen comes 40 days after Ashura, the martyrdom anniversary of the third Shia Imam, Imam Hussein (AS).

Each year, a huge crowd of Shias, including many Iranians, flock to the Iraqi city of Karbala, where the holy shrine of Imam Hussein (AS) is located, to perform mourning rites.

Arbaeen fell on Saturday, October 19, this year.

Elsewhere in his remarks, Mousavi referred to the recent Turkish incursion into northern Syria and said Iran is opposed to the attack.

He added that the Islamic Republic believes that Syria’s sovereignty and territorial integrity must be respected and humanitarian considerations must also be taken into account.
