TEHRAN (IQNA) – The chairman of the Iraqi Popular Mobilization Units (PMU) – better known by the Arabic word Hashd al-Sha’abi – underscored the role Lt. General Qassem Soleimani played in helping Iraq defeat the Daesh terrorist group.

Addressing a ceremony held Sunday at Mustansiriyah University to honor the martyrs of the resistance movement, Falih al-Fayyadh said Martyr Soleimani greatly helped Iraq in the anti-Daesh battle.

He condemned the US assassination of General Soleimani and PMU deputy commander Abu Mahdi al-Muhandis and said those who committed the crime must know that these martyrs’ path continues.

Fayyadh further said the PMU is an asset for the entire Iraqi nation and it will serve the people of the country in all areas.

He also reiterated the need for the expulsion of the US forces from Iraq.

Lieutenant General Qassem Soleimani, the commander of the Quds Force of Iran’s Islamic Revolution Guards Corps (IRGC), and his Iraqi trenchmate Abu Mahdi al-Muhandis, the deputy head of the Popular Mobilization Units, were assassinated along with their companions in a US terror drone strike authorized by Trump near Baghdad International Airport on January 3, 2020.

Just two days after the assassination, Iraqi lawmakers approved a bill, demanding the withdrawal of all foreign military forces led by the United States from the country.

Both commanders were admired by Muslim nations for their role in eliminating the US-sponsored Daesh Takfiri terrorist group in the region, particularly in Iraq and Syria.

The US assassination drew a wave of condemnation from officials and movements throughout the world, and triggered huge public protests across the region.
