TEHRAN (IQNA) – An international virtual conference titled “Legitimacy of Mourning Imam Hussein’s (AS) Martyrdom” was jointly organized by Iran and Lebanon.

The participants in the webinar slammed as unjust and oppressive a ban on Muharram mourning rituals in some Arab and Muslim countries.

They said the ban signifies that the rulers of these countries are afraid of seeing the spread of the message of Imam Hussein’s (AS) uprising.

Jointly organized by the Ashura International Foundation and Lebanon’s Ummah Wahida (united community) Center, the online forum was attended by scholars and figures from Iran, Lebanon and a number of other countries, according to the foundation’s public relations office.

The managing Director of the foundation, Ayatollah Mohammad Hassan Akhtari, in his speech said Muslim nations hold different rituals to commemorate the martyrdom anniversary of Imam Hussein (AS).

He said the rituals and ceremonies are opportunities for enhancing unity among Muslims and all other noble people of the world.

The cleric also underlined the need for learning about the Ashura uprising to correct the woes in the Muslim world.

Referring to the sufferings of the oppressed nations of Palestine and some other Muslim countries, he said the only way to save them is getting inspiration from the school of Imam Hussein (AS).

Another speaker at the conference was Sayyed Fadi al-Sayyed, head of the Ummah Wahida Center, who said the purpose of Imam Hussein’s (AS) uprising was to revive the religion that was brought by his grandfather (the Holy Prophet).

He also said the ban on mourning rituals for Imam Hussein (AS) in certain Arab and Muslim countries is because they are afraid of the message of the Imam’s uprising.

Sheikh Khalid al-Mala, head of the Iraqi Sunni scholars society, also addressed the webinar, saying the love for Imam Hussein (AS) and mourning his martyrdom gets one closer to God.

He further stressed the need for the followers of the path of Imam Hussein (AS) to struggle against the world arrogance and support the oppressed people of Palestine.
