Egyptian Awqaf Minister Mohamed Mokhtar Gomaa officiated the opening ceremony, which was also attended by the country’s Minister of Youth and Sports Ashraf Subhi and the Grand Mufti, Shawki Allam, Youm7.com website reported.
Gomaa said in his address that Egypt will continue to train great qaris of the Quran like in the past.
Subhi also addressed the ceremony, describing the competition as an important venue for young Muslim from various countries to showcase their Quranic talents.
Quran memorizers from 66 countries are taking part in this edition of the international event, which will run through Tuesday, February 22.
Three Islamic and Quranic characters of Egypt, namely member of the country’s Senior Scholars Society Ahmed Omar Hisham, prominent Quran reciter Ahmed Ahemd Noaina and head of the country’s Quran Radio Ridha Abdul Salam, will be honored during the competition.
