Russian FM Voices Concern at Daesh Activities in Central Asia
TEHRAN (IQNA) – Russia Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov expressed his country’s concerns about plans by the Daesh (ISIL or ISIS) terrorist group to expand its activities in Central Asia.
“Moscow is worried about Daesh and its supporters’ plans to destabilize Central Asia and export terrorism to Central Asia and Russia,” Lavrov said Thursday, addressing the conference of the top diplomats of Afghanistan’s neighbors in China.
He also said escalation of Daesh presence near the borders of Afghanistan, Tajikistan, and Uzbekistan is worrying.
In recent years, some citizens of Central Asian countries, especially Uzbekistan and Tajikistan, have joined the Daesh terrorist group and some of them went to Syria via Turkey.
Since the defeat of Daesh in Syria and Iraq and in view of recent developments in Afghanistan, concerns have grown among Afghanistan’s neighbors that the country might become a hub for Daesh’s activities.
