TEHRAN (IQNA) – The first edition of an international Quran competition for representatives of holy shrines started in Karbala.

Organized by the Dar-ol-Quran Center affiliated to the Astan (custodianship) of Imam Hussein (AS) holy shrine, the competition started on July 23 at Imam Hussein (AS) holy shrine.

The opening ceremony of the competition was held with senior clerics, religious authorities, and competitors.

Competitors from Iraq, Egypt, Syria, Lebanon, Iran, and Afghanistan are participating in the event.

The contest is underway in two categories of recitation and memorization.

Speaking at the inaugural ceremony, director of the Iraqi Dar-ol-Quran Sheikh Khayruddin Ali al-Hadi pointed to the importance of the contest, noting this is the first time that representatives from holy shrines of different states have gathered for a Quranic competition in Iraq.

He hoped that the event could help prove the depth of cultural identity of Iraq and neighboring Islamic countries, guide the Quranic discourse, and spot young talents.
