‘Labaik Ya Hussein’ Reverberates As Flags of Karbala Holy Shrines Are Replaced

Ceremonies were held on the eve of Muharram on Friday with the participation of servants of the two holy shrines and pilgrims.

They chanted ‘Labaik ya Hussein’ as the black flags of mourning were raised on the domes of the mausoleums.

‘Labaik ya Hussain’ is an expression generally associated with the commemorations of Muharram. It literally means, “I am here, O Hussein!”. It is a symbolic statement of solidarity with Imam Hussein (AS) and his martyred companions, his values, and his historic mission.

Muharram, which began today, July 30, is the first month in the lunar Hijri calendar.

Shia Muslims, and others in different parts of the world, hold ceremonies every year in the month of Muharram to mourn the martyrdom anniversary of Imam Hussein (AS) and his companions.

The third Shia Imam (AS) and a small group of his followers and family members were martyred by the tyrant of his time - Yazid Bin Muawiya, in the battle of Karbala on the tenth day of Muharram (known as Ashura) in the year 680 AD.
