IQNA – Grand Ayatollah Ali al-Sistani, the top Shia religious authority in Najaf, issued a message of condolences on the death of Ayatollah Fayyad Sheikh Muhammad Ishaq Fayyad.

Ayatollah Fayyad Sheikh Muhammad Ishaq Fayyad, one of Iraq’s sources of emulation, died on Thursday morning, June 4, 2026, in Baghdad at the age of 96.

 

Ayatollah Fayyad, one of Iraq’s sources of emulation, died on Thursday morning in Baghdad at the age of 96.

Born in Afghanistan in 1930, he moved to Najaf, Iraq, at a young age to study religious sciences. He was among the top students of Ayatollah Seyed Abolqassem Khoei.

Ayatollah Fayyad later became one of the most prominent scholars of Najaf Islamic Seminary.

After his death, the Iraqi prime minister declared three days of national morning.  

In his message of condolence, Ayatollah Sistani said, “With the utmost sadness, I received the news of the passing of the righteous scholar and religious authority, Ayatollah Sheikh Muhammad Ishaq Fayyad (may Allah be pleased with him).

The late nobleman was one of the prominent and renowned figures of the Najaf Ashraf Seminary in recent decades and was distinguished and known for his sincere efforts in serving science and scholars through writing, teaching, and other activities. Therefore, his loss is a heavy and irreparable loss, and the void he has left behind is vast and will be difficult to fill except by the grace and mercy of God Almighty.”

Ayatollah Sistani offered his condolences to seminaries, the family of the deceased, and all believers, on this great tragedy, and asked God, the Most High and Almighty, to elevate his ranks in the highest levels of paradise.
