TEHRAN (IQNA) – Kuwait’s Awqaf ministry announced the launch of the final stage of a major Quran memorization and Tajweed contest in the Arab country.

The ministry said the competition began at the Grand Mosque in Kuwait city on Sunday night and will run for two weeks, Al-Ray daily reported.

This is the 25th edition of the competition being held under the auspicious of the ruler of Kuwait, Emir Nawaf Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah.

Minister of Awqaf and Islamic Affairs Abdulaziz Majid Al-Majid in an address to the opening ceremony said the success of the Quranic event in the previous 24 editions has encouraged more citizens and expatiates to take part in the contest.

He said last year’s edition saw the participation of 1939 men and women in the final round while the number has risen to 2190 Quran memorizer this year.

According to the official, the total number of the contenders in the Quranic event since it was launched in 1996 has reached 36,000.

He also hailed the support from the Emir of Kuwait for raising the country’s children based on the teachings of Islam.

Also addressing the ceremony was Maarib al-Yaqoub, the coordinator of the competition, who said the organizer are proud to have served the Holy Quran for 25 years and have not stopped organizing the Quranic event even during the coronavirus pandemic.

The top winners of the competition will be announced by the Awqaf minister and awarded at the closing ceremony.
