According to a report by Al-Nasr website, hundreds of Algerian parents, far from the hustle and bustle of the streets and the allure of electronic screens, enroll their children in Quranic schools every summer, believing in the value of these institutions for the beneficial use of leisure time and the institutionalization of religious and moral values.

Among these institutions, the Gaza Quranic School stands out; for 24 years, this school has dedicated itself to teaching and facilitating the memorization of the Holy Quran and has become a beacon of knowledge and character building that has trained hundreds of male and female memorizers.

A school in the heart of a mosque

The story of this school is intertwined with the history of the place where it is located. The school was built on the ruins of the old Hassanein mosque, a place that was used as a torture chamber during the French colonial era and was used again as a religious center after independence.

After the construction of the new Hassanein mosque in 1986, the idea of ​​​​creating an independent Quranic school to teach the Quran to the younger generation was raised, and after its inauguration, the school began to fulfill its educational mission.

Since its opening, the Gaza Quranic School has attracted Quranic students from Hama Bouziane and various other regions of the Constantine province. The school offers educational programs tailored to different age groups, including preparatory classes for children and adult literacy courses, and a specialized program for issuing a Quranic license (specialized recitation certificate), making it an accessible space for anyone who wishes to learn the Quran.

During a field visit to the school, an Al-Nasr correspondent witnessed the spiritual atmosphere prevailing in its various sections.

“The sound of students reciting verses from the Quran filled the space, and the memorization circles were an impressive testimony to the deep connection of the youth with the Book of God. This is done with the careful monitoring of female teachers who use teaching methods appropriate to the age and memorization skills of the students.”

Filling free time with the Quran

The school’s principal, Muhammad Taher Murad, emphasized that the institution has been fulfilling its educational mission for more than two decades. This school is not just a space for memorizing the Holy Quran, but a school dedicated to educating generations based on Islamic ethics and Quranic values.

He explained that the school welcomes students of all ages and offers programs tailored to the abilities of each Quran learner.

Murad stated that the wide acceptance of the summer courses indicates the parents’ trust in the school’s role in educating their children and strengthening their connection with the Holy Quran.

He also noted that the school operates during the week, but its activities increase during the summer holidays. Parents welcome these courses, which are held so that their children can benefit from their holidays to memorize the Quran and learn the principles of Islam.

He added that the registration for the current summer course was carried out in May and June, and 433 students registered, who were organized into 18 groups under the supervision of female instructors specializing in Quran education.

In specialized Quran memorization classes, Quran circles are formed, which are particularly lively with the voices of children reciting verses from the Quran under the constant supervision of instructors.

Students in these classes are grouped according to age and level of memorization, which allows for the implementation of an educational program tailored to the specific needs of each group.

Special Literacy Program

Samah Daouadi, a female Quran teacher at the school, explained to Al-Nasr that the institution does not limit itself to teaching children; it also welcomes adults, including high school students, university students, housewives and mothers, through a special program designed to memorize parts of the Book of God.

She added that adult classes are held regularly throughout the week, for a total of five hours, with a program that suits their conditions.

The Algerian Quran teacher emphasized that the summer holidays are a valuable opportunity for those who wish to use their time effectively to learn and review the Quran.

Strengthening Quran memorization skills

She stated that her goal is to help people from different groups improve their memorization skills and make the Book of God a daily companion, regardless of their age or level of education.

The children participating in the school classes also have a special enthusiasm that accompanies them on the path of memorizing the Quran. They expressed their satisfaction with the atmosphere provided by the institution and the opportunity it offers to learn the Quran alongside their peers.

Some children emphasized that attending school during the summer holidays is not just a daily task; it has become an event that they look forward to. They pointed out that the encouragement and guidance of the teachers, as well as the spirit of friendly competition between the Quran circles, motivate them to work harder to strengthen their Quranic recitation and memorization.

One child stated that he reviews what he has memorized at school at home.

He said that learning the Quran has helped him improve his recitation skills and manage his time effectively.

Other children also aspire to be able to memorize the entire Quran in the future, following the school’s graduating Quranic students.

Sheikh Muhammad Riaz Al-Ayeb, Imam of Al-Hassanin Mosque, explained that the main purpose of such schools is not limited to memorizing the Holy Quran; rather, it is to provide an educational environment that protects children from aimlessness and unproductive use of their free time. This gives parents the assurance that their children are learning the teachings of Islam in a safe and organized environment.

He added that these schools help to institutionalize good values ​​and morals, strengthen discipline and good behavior among the youth, teach the rules of reciting the Quran and memorize parts of the Book of God.

Nurturing more than 150 female memorizers

On the other hand, Murad, the school’s director, emphasized that the school’s efforts this season have resulted in the graduation of seven female students who have completely memorized the Holy Quran.

“Many of them have been employed to serve in various mosques throughout the province of Constantine, teaching the Book of God and disseminating Quranic knowledge; an achievement that demonstrates the greatness of the work done by the school’s teaching staff and their determination to continue the mission of teaching the Book of God.”
