TEHRAN (IQNA) – The director of Iran’s Islamic seminaries has pointed to the need to focus on new technologies such as artificial intelligence, noting that they can improve Islamic studies.

Ayatollah Alireza Arafi

“Using computer science is not just aimed at facilitating and accelerating research, rather, it has provided new horizons for studies,” Ayatollah Alireza Arafi said on Thursday while addressing a ceremony in Qom held to unveil a software that offers Shia and Sunni hadiths.

“The artificial intelligence is creating a ground for new take-offs in the area of expanding the borders of understanding religious texts,” said the cleric.

All levels of computer science should be used to enhance the understanding, he said, adding that Islamic knowledge and sciences should be reflected in cyberspace.

“The artificial intelligence should be at the service of divine knowledge and the great knowledge of philosophers and jurists should be published on social media,” he said.

He noted that all these services should be provided to people free of charge both in web-based and mobile app formats.

He also proposed launching an annual festival for promoting the use of novel technologies in various areas, including in seminaries.
