Russian Quran Translator Krachkovsky Commemorated in Saint Petersburg (+Photos)

TEHRAN (IQNA) – The National Library of Russia hosted an event on Thursday to commemorate late orientalist and Quran translator Ignatius Krachkovsky.

 

Entitled "master of orientalism", the event was held at the National Library of Russia in Saint Petersburg with the participation of a number of scholars, students, and reporters. 

It included an exhibition that put on display Krachkovsky's scientific works as well as his personal books that have been donated to the library by his wife Vera Krachkovskaya in 1972.

This is one of the largest private book collections, numbering over 20 thousand publications.

Addressing the event, Director General of the National Library of Russia Vladimir Gronsky said that the institute is ready to support any initiative that leads to maintaining the late scholar's works and legacy.

"Krachkovskaya wrote more than 450 scientific papers, his books were translated into many languages ​​of the world, and he was awarded the Order of Lenin. It's nice that the scientist's wife donated not only Krachkovsky's books but also data-x-items from his office to the National Library of Russia. And everyone can see some of them at the presented exposition,” he added.

Damir Mukhetdinov, First Deputy Chairman of the Spiritual Administration of Muslims of the Russian Federation, read out a letter from Mufti Ravil Gainutdin. “Krachkovsky is one of the scientists who have raised the authority of the Russian school of oriental studies in the world," he said, adding, "his creativity and scientific achievements throughout the Arab-Muslim society deserved high respect."

"As a professor at Leningrad University, he brought up a large number of students. He can rightly be considered a mentor of all modern Islamic studies," he added.

Born on March 16, 1883, Krachkovsky was a specialist in Arabic studies and one of the founders of the Soviet school of Arabic studies.

He wrote numerous works on the literature and language, history, and culture of Arabs. He systematically studied contemporary Arabic literature, classical Arabic literature, Arabic poetry, and metric.

He worked on Arabic manuscripts of Russian collections and studied Russian-Arabic literary contacts. He studies Arabic Christian literature, Ethiopian medieval literature and culture, and historical-cultural and epigraphic monuments of South Arabia.

He is also famous for his translation of the Holy Quran into Russian in 1963.

The scholar passed away on January 24, 1951.
