Nouakchott Blind Association A Place for Visually-Impaired to Learn Quran
The association uses the equipment and technologies that facilitate teaching the Holy Book to the blind.
Among the most important needs of the blind who want to learn the Quran is copies of the Holy Book in braille and they can find the copies in the classes organized by the association.
And most of those who come to the association are already familiar with the braille system.
Braille is a writing system which enables the blind and partially-sighted people to read and write through touch.
It was invented by Louis Braille (1809-1852), who was blind and became a teacher of the blind.
In recent years, the Holy Quran and religious books have been printed in Braille to help the visually-impaired Muslims read the texts with ease.
According to Syed Mohamed, who supervises the classes for new members of the Nouakchott Association for the Blind, new Qurans in braille have been distributed by the Mauritanian government.
Abdullah Mohamed is the founder of the association. He established it two decades ago and soon it attracted many members.
He says the members meet regularly to share their experiences and discuss the problems they face.
There are no official statistics about the number of visually-impaired people in Mauritania but the number is estimated to be in the thousands.
The Islamic Republic of Mauritania is a country in the Maghreb region of western North Africa.
The country’s population is estimated to be about 4 million and virtually all Mauritanians are Muslims.
Quranic activities and programs are very popular in the African country.
