IQNA – An Iranian official announced an increase in the number of applicants for travel to the holy shrines in Iraq after the Arbaeen procession.

Morteza Aghaei, the director general of the Atabat Department in the Hajj and Pilgrimage Organization, was asked by IQNA about whether the presence of a large number of Iranian pilgrims in the Arbaeen procession earlier this month has led to a decrease in the number of applicants for pilgrimage to the Iraqi holy shrines.

“Currently, our dispatches (of pilgrims) have increased compared to before Arbaeen,” he said.

Part of the increase in the number of pilgrims is due to the special conditions before Arbaeen, when the atmosphere (the conditions of the 12-day war) was not suitable for travel and people were unable to visit the Atabat (Shia holy shrines in Iraq), he noted.

He said a new round of dispatches to Atabat began on August 17, and despite the increase in prices in the foreign exchange market, “we have not made any changes to the cost of traveling to the shrines, and pilgrims will be able to visit at the same rate as before.”

Aghaei also announced efforts to organize flights to the holy cities in Iraq with the aim of reducing prices and hoped these efforts will bear fruit.

Every year, millions of Iranians travel to the holy cities in Iraq, including Karbala, Najaf, Samarra and Kadhimiya, to visit the holy shrines of the Infallible Imams (AS).
