MECCA (IQNA) – The Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) has announced an urgent meeting following a recent desecration of the Holy Quran in the Swedish capital of Stockholm.

The Saudi Press Agency (SPA) reported on Friday that the Executive Committee of the intergovernmental organization would meet next week at the invitation of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and the President of the [OIC's] Islamic Summit to address the issue.

The act of disrespect, which was authorized by a Swedish court, involved two men who burnt pages of the Muslim holy book outside the Stockholm Central Mosque on Wednesday. The incident coincided with Eid al-Adha, a Muslim celebration that marks the end of the annual Hajj pilgrimage that attracts millions of Muslims from around the world.

The SPA said that the meeting would take place in the OIC's headquarters in [the Saudi port city of] Jeddah and would examine "the consequences of burning a copy of the Holy Quran in Sweden on the first day of Eid Al-Adha".

The report added that the meeting next week would determine the steps to be taken “against the heinous act and to adapt a collective position on the necessary course of action.”

Muslims from across the world have slammed the desecration and also Sweden’s greenlight for the act.
