WASHINTON, DC (IQNA) – A man selling goods associated with the Islamic faith outside a mosque in Providence, Rhode Island, was shot and wounded on Friday morning, according to local police.

The incident has prompted an increase in patrols in the area as authorities search for a suspect and a motive.

Police Chief Oscar Perez stated that the shooting took place at the Islamic Center of Rhode Island.

The shooting comes against a backdrop of rising Islamophobia in the US following the recent war between Hamas and the Israeli regime. However, the police did not disclose whether they were focusing on any particular reason for the attack.

The victim, who is affiliated with the mosque, had set up a table to sell "Islamic goods" when he was shot in the lower part of his body. The precise nature of the goods was not specified.

An officer nearby heard the gunfire and promptly responded. The 52-year-old victim was subsequently transported to a hospital for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries.

In an interview with WPRI, Perez expressed his sadness over the incident and emphasized that the police would be providing security in the area to ensure everyone's safety.

The interview also showed officers engaging with individuals outside the Islamic Center. At the time of reporting, there has been no response from the center regarding further details about the incident.
