Over 3.6 Million Iranians Take Part in 2024 Arbaeen Pilgrimage

Altogether, the operation was one of the most successful in recent years. 

While the weather was very warm in Iraq’s holy cities and in Iran’s border crossings, and there were threats of heat stroke and spread of viral diseases, there were no major health related issues during the Arbeen procession this year.

According to official statistics, a total of 3.658 million Iranians visited Iraq for Arbaeen this year.

More than 77 percent of them traveled to the Arab country by car while nearly 400,000 pilgrims went to Iraq by place.

Meanwhile, the total number of Arbaeen pilgrims who traveled to Karbala from all over the world this year exceeded 21.4 million, according to the Astan (custodianship) of the holy shrine of Hazrat Abbas (AS).

Arbaeen is a religious event observed by Shia Muslims on the fortieth day after the Day of Ashura, commemorating the martyrdom of Imam Hussein (AS), the grandson of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) and the third Shia imam.

It is one of the largest annual pilgrimages in the world, with millions of Shia Muslims walking to Karbala from various cities in Iraq and neighboring countries. This year, the day of Arbaeen fell on August 25.
