The ceasefire began with some three-hour delay.

Israeli prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s office says the release of three captives held in Gaza will take place after 14:00 GMT.

In a statement, it also said four other living female captives would be freed in seven days.

The six-week initial ceasefire phase includes the gradual withdrawal of Israeli forces from central Gaza and the return of displaced Palestinians to northern Gaza.

The deal requires 600 truckloads of humanitarian aid to be allowed into Gaza every day of the ceasefire, 50 carrying fuel, with 300 of the trucks allocated to the north, where conditions for civilians are particularly harsh.

One person was killed in Rafah, six people were killed in Khan Younis, nine were killed in Gaza City and three in the north, he said in a statement.

The Government Media Office in Gaza says thousands of Palestinian police officers have been deployed in the territory “as part of a government plan to maintain security and order across various governorates”, adding that municipalities have started “reopening and rehabilitating streets”.

Videos also show Hamas fighters taking to streets to maintain order, showing that the Israeli purported aim of eliminating Hamas has failed.

“Government ministries and institutions are fully prepared to begin operations according to the government plan to ensure the swift and gradual return of normal life,” it said the statement, adding that the return of displaced people will commence seven days after the ceasefire comes into effect.

Meanwhile, footage shows displaces Palestinians heading towards homes to see if anything remains after 15 months of relentless bombing campaign by occupation forces.

The Israeli genocidal war on the besieged territory started after Palestinian resistance fighters, led by Hamas, launched Operation Al-Aqsa Flood in response to decades of Israeli bloodshed and violence against Palestinians on October 7, 2023.

The Israeli war has destroyed large swaths of Gaza, leaving almost all of the 2.3 million population displaced. The regime is facing genocide charges for war crimes in Gaza at the world court.
