Mourning Flag Raised at Najaf Shrine Ahead of Imam Ali Martyrdom Anniversary

IQNA – As the martyrdom anniversary of Imam Ali (AS) approaches, a flag of mourning was raised at the courtyard of the first Imam’s holy shrine in Najaf, Iraq.

The servants of the Astan (custodianship) of the shrine have also installed black banners and covered different parts of the mausoleum in black on the sad occasion. 

The 19th of Ramadan, which falls on Thursday, March 19, this year, marks the anniversary of the day when the first Shia Imam, while saying prayers at the Kufa Mosque, was struck in the head with a poisonous sword by Ibn Muljam Muradi, a Kharijite.

Imam Ali (AS) was martyred two days later on the 21st day of Ramadan.

Shia Muslims and others all over the world mourn the martyrdom of the Commander of the Faithful (AS) during ceremonies in these few days every year.
