IQNA – The office of Grand Ayatollah Ali al-Sistani, Iraq’s senior Shia cleric, has issued a formal message of condolence following the death of Kashmiri religious scholar Allama Aga Syed Mohammad Baqir al-Moosavi al-Najafi.

In a statement shared by Ayatollah Sistani’s office, the Iraqi cleric expressed deep sorrow over the passing of the revered scholar.

"The news of the passing of the esteemed religious figure Hujjat al-Islam wal-Muslimeen Hajj Syed Mohammad Baqir al-Moosavi Kashmiri (may his soul rest in peace) has brought us great sorrow and regret," the statement read.

The message praised Allama Baqir for dedicating decades of his life to the propagation of Islam and service to the faithful.

"He spent many long years of his noble life promoting the religion and serving the believers, enduring great efforts in this noble cause," it continued.

Ayatollah Sistani extended his condolences to the people of Kashmir, particularly the scholar’s family, admirers, and the broader Shia community, praying for his elevated spiritual status and patience for those mourning his loss.

Allama Baqir, who passed away early Friday at the age of 85 at SMHS Hospital in Srinagar, was widely recognized as a leading religious figure in Kashmir and a senior member of the respected Aga family.

Born on March 21, 1940, he began his early education at Babul Ilm in Budgam before advancing his studies at the Howza Ilmia seminary in Najaf, Iraq — one of the world’s foremost centers of Shia scholarship.

He returned to Kashmir in 1982, continuing the spiritual legacy of his ancestor, Aga Syed Yusuf al-Moosavi al-Safavi. Known for his deep knowledge, humility, and spiritual insight, Allama Baqir served as Grand Ayatollah Sistani’s representative in Kashmir.

He was fluent in Arabic, Persian, and Kashmiri, and was also known as a poet, author, and preacher.

In recognition of his scholarly contributions, he was honored with the Shaheed Murtaza Mutahhari Award, a prestigious accolade in the field of Islamic studies.
