IQNA – Authorities in Ontario are investigating an incident of alleged hate-motivated vandalism after seven vehicles and a mosque entrance were reportedly damaged in Orono, a community located in the Durham Region.

According to the Durham Regional Police Service (DRPS), officers responded to a call at approximately 10:30 p.m. on Saturday at 111 Church Street North. Upon arrival, they discovered that seven vehicles had been vandalized along with the front door of a local mosque.

In a press release issued on Sunday, DRPS appealed to the public for assistance. “We are urging anyone who witnessed the incident, or who may have dashcam, CCTV, or cellphone phone footage from the area around the time of the incident, to please come forward,” the statement read, City News reported on Sunday.

Police acknowledged the emotional impact the event has had on local residents. “We are aware of the deep concern and distress this incident has caused, particularly within our Muslim community. We understand the fear and anxiety such events can create, and we want to reassure everyone that we are taking this matter seriously,” authorities stated.

The police emphasized that the investigation remains active and that they are engaging with community leaders to support those affected. Our investigation is ongoing, and we are working closely with community leaders to provide support and ensure that all residents feel safe,” the statement read.

No arrests have been made as of yet, and the motive behind the incident has not been officially confirmed. However, the case is being treated as a suspected hate-motivated crime.

Orono is a small community located east of Toronto in the Canadian province of Ontario.
