
Authorities say the threat arrived Thursday via an online platform. It included the precise address of the Kilbirnie Masjid.
The Wellington Islamic Centre confirmed the information and noted that other mosques and Islamic centres across Wellington were alerted to the threat.
According to the Federation of the Islamic Associations of New Zealand (FIANZ), the mosque “regularly receives threats.” FIANZ’s advocacy chairman, Abdur Razzaq, told the Herald the police “response had been amazing.”
Councilor Nureddin Abdurahman, from the city’s Southern Ward, said he received an email from FIANZ about the threat. He stated that authorities are “taking necessary precautions.”

New Zealand has faced significant challenges related to Islamophobia and attacks on mosques. In March 2019, 51 worshippers were killed in mass shootings at Al Noor Mosque and Linwood Islamic Centre in Christchurch.
A royal commission later found that Muslims in New Zealand frequently experienced discrimination, threatening comments, and under-reporting of bias to authorities.
