IQNA – The Holy Quran mentions “mutual Wilayah (guardianship) of the believers” and “prohibition of guardianship of the People of the Book”.

Hence, the Quran has established for the believer the path of love and the path of declaring hatred so that the path of love and assistance of the disbelievers does not lead to Wilayah in managing and supervising them.

Wilayah is one of the most used words in the Holy Quran. God Almighty is not only God but also the Wali: “So Allah is the Guardian” (Ash-Shura: 9); in fact, Wilayah, meaning guardianship, is exclusive to God Almighty and if someone does not benefit from it, the Wilayah of the Taghut is imposed on him as a divine punishment (Al-Baqarah: 257).

On another level, the Holy Quran introduces the mutual Wilayah of the believers; they are brothers to each other (Al-Hujurat: 10) and they should “maintain their Wilayah” (At-Tawbah: 71). A person cannot have Wilayah with both a believer and a non-believer; Therefore, the Holy Quran has established for the believer both the path of Wilayah and the path of declaring hatred.

The Holy Quran emphasizes that you should never establish a relationship of Wilayah and friendship with the infidels (An-Nisa: 144), with the enemies of God (Mumtahanah: 1), and with the Jews and Christians: “Do not take the Jews and the Christians as your allies,” (Al-Ma’idah: 51).

Above all, it says that if your fathers and children are not on your religious path, do not establish a relationship of Wilayah with them (At-Tawbah: 23); therefore, at first a person’s Bara’at (min al-mushrikin: (disavowal of disbelievers) must be clear, so that he can direct his inclination.

But what is the reason for this abandonment of Wilayahs? The Holy Quran in Verse 28 of Surah Al Imran, after ordering against the Wilayah of the disbelievers, says: “And whoever does that, then his relationship with Allah is severed.” The reason is that Wilayah in its initial stage reaches love and support, but in higher stages it can reach supervision and management. Verse 51 of Surah Al-Ma’idah also explains: “And whoever among you takes a Jew or a Christian as a friend, then indeed he is one of them.”

Therefore, in order to prevent man from falling into that grave danger, God Almighty forbids from the very beginning the Wila of closeness and love, so that it does not end in the Wila of management and supervision.
