muharram

Muharram marks the beginning of the Islamic lunar calendar and is one of the four holy months during which conflict is traditionally forbidden. Ashura, observed on the tenth day of Muharram, holds considerable significance in the Islamic tradition. For Shia Muslims, Ashura is a solemn day of remembrance for the martyrdom of Hussein ibn Ali, the prophet Muhammad's grandson and the third Imam. Imam Hussein (AS) and many of his family members and followers were martyred in the Battle of Karbala in 680 CE by the forces of the Umayyad caliph Yazid ibn Mu'awiya. The first ten days of Muharram are a period of intense reflection and mourning for Shia Muslims, culminating in processions and commemorations on Ashura.
