Egyptian radical theologian Yusuf al-Qaradawi has resigned from the Council of Senior Scholars.

The council is the highest religious authority affiliated to Egypt’s Al-Azhar Islamic University.

Restored after the victory of Egypt’s 2012 revolution, the council is tasked with selecting the Sheikh of Al-Azhar and the grand Mufti of Egypt.

It also issues Fatwas on ethical and social issues of the Muslim world.

Al-Qaradawi, who heads the International Union of Muslim Scholars, has offered his resignation to the Egyptian people, Al-Ahram daily reported.

He announced in his tweeter account that he is leaving the council.

Since the ouster of former president Mohammad Morsi, Al-Qaradawi has become a critic of the Egyptian government, calling Morsi’s overthrow a coup.

He has been urging the Egyptian people to continue their street rallies in protest to the military coup d'état.

The extremist cleric has also called on Takfiri Salafists to go to Syria to fight against the government of President Bashar Al-Assad.
