Two car bombs went off in Al-Rashid District, south of Baghdad, on Monday afternoon, leaving 17 people dead and 52 others injured, Al-Alam news network reported.
They were all Shia pilgrims who were on thei way to the southern city of Karbala to take part in the mourning ceremonies marking Arbaeen (the 40th day after Ashura, martyrdom anniversary of Imam Hussein (AS)).
In the past, Al-Qaeda-linked terrorists have frequently targeted these pilgrims who walk to the holy city of Karbala from different Iraqi cities.
Iraq has been the scene of rising violence since the beginning of the year 2013. So far more than 6400 people have been killed in the violence this year.
