The armed men who were planning to target Shia pilgrims were killed in clashes with security forces on Tuesday, December 17, at Al-Zambraniya district, south of Baghdad, Sawt Al-Iraq website reported.

Millions of pilgrims from Iraq and other countries are travelling to the holy city of Karbala, many of them on foot, to mourn the Arbaeen (anniversary of the 40th day after the martyrdom of Imam Hussein (AS) in the Battle of Karbala) in the city.

Security measures are being stepped up as the day of Arbaeen (December 23) approaches.

According to Al-Alam news agency, security officials have warned the pilgrims not to accept any prayer books, food, water, etc as gifts because they may contain explosives.

They have urged people to cooperate with security forces and remain calm in case of any incident.
