Addressing a conference on “religions and violence”, Abbas Shouman, the deputy head of Al-Azhar, said violent acts against Muslims in the CAR and some Asian countries must be condemned.
The Muslim minority population in the Central African Republic has been the relentless target of mob killings and lynching in recent weeks. The severe wave of violence has forced tens of thousands of Muslims to flee to neighboring countries such as Chad and the Democratic Republic of Congo.
Shouman further called on the world powers to stop their double standard policies in the international arena and their prejudices against Muslims.
He also reiterated that the unacceptable acts committed by a few Muslims do represent Islam.
The international conference on religion and violence was held in Italy on Wednesday, February 19, with the participation of a delegation from Al-Azhar.
